OK, I don’t want to jump on the Coronavirus bandwagon and do an entire episode on it instead of self storage, but indulge me somewhat.

Let’s discuss it and how it can relate to you getting in, or expanding your self storage business.

Backpedaling

I admit it. I am publically backtracking on my initial posture about the coronavirus.

I argued that the outbreak was the media’s newest way to get ratings, create fear, so we would all have to tune in and see the next episode of the news.

“The flu kills more people than this ever will” —My arrogant, ill-informed opinion.

A rather opinionated way of being.

My poor wife. She has a medical background and immediately knew the potential havoc COVID-19 could wreak. She also had to listen to me for a few days as I had a different, un-informed opinion of what was going on.

As I write this, today, there are 175,275 confirmed cases globally, and 6,706 confirmed deaths.

The flu mortality rate is 0.1%, COVID-19 is 3% -4%. It is also much more infectious.

At first, I thought all the Governors requesting churches, restaurants etc. not to operate was “over the top.”Now I am grateful.

When schools and childcare facilities closed, many who had not been staying home now are forced to do so.

Opportunity

What an opportunity.

First of all, if you have been wondering how you can have the time to do all the study and research it takes to get in self storage, here you go.

I have been using this time to work on all the self storage projects I have been postponing because of how “busy” I am.

Many people I work with have had a hard time scheduling in their busy calendars, the time to research opportunities, analyze the, create their list of possible projects to preview.

Now you can.

Block out a few hours daily to devote to your getting in or getting your next self storage project.

Family

The thing I was the most embarrassed about was how I could have exposed my wife to the virus.

If I had continued my un-informed behavior, being in public may not have hurt me, but if I had exposed my wife to the virus, well, that is a thought I can’t even be with very long.

My coaching is to use this time to also really connect with your family members in a way we haven’t in a long time.

Trying to do as much as I can from home is a new way of being for me, but I am enjoying it.

I am able to spend more time with my wife, and that is a real blessing.

It also really shows me my shortcomings and where I can improve in being in a relationship.

However, I am grateful for that as well.

I see just how much I keep on working or thinking about something else while she is talking to me.

I am using this period to really be more present, attentive, and “connected” with her, and others than I have been. I am taking this on as a challenge and opportunity to improve who I am in a relationship, just like using this time to expand my self storage business.

Now I realize everyone may not have someone at home with them. But you do have people in your life, and neighbors. Connect (virtually if you can, don’t forget social distancing) with them, and perhaps you could offer them any support you are in a position to offer, even if it is just listening to what they are experiencing.

Yes, what a real opportunity this is for us.

I haven’t experienced anything like this in my life before.

Family History

I am reminded of my Great Uncle. He died in the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.

The family history is that he was in New Orleans on business from his home town of Louisville. He was there when the outbreak happened. He ended up in a makeshift hospital and never got back to Louisville.

How lucky we are to be experiencing this pandemic 100 year later when the odds are some much more in our favor. We have infinitely better tools to fight it, infinitely better ways to stay connected and productive, and so many more ways to keep up with the world as we wait it out.

Let’s use this time wisely and not squander the opportunity that is before us.

Also, reach out and let me know if you think you may be interested in the QuickStart Training mentioned above.

My experience is, even virtually, having the chance to take yourself deep in training, and then have a community of other like-minded people with you and supporting you, makes a big difference in your success.

It has in mine.

I took that valuable experience and created the 2020 Virtual Self Storage Boot Camp. You’ll be surrounded by like-minded individuals like I was and learn how to take a self storage facility from zero all the way to putting it into service.

Next week, we will discuss one of the things I see in a lot of the facilities I look at, and it is something we should never do.

Thanks for indulging, and don’t hesitate to reach out.
